How to deal with bullies in the classroom
Practical tips for teachers:
1. Stay Calm and Address It Immediately*
Never ignore bullying. Stop the behavior as soon as it happens, but do it firmly and calmly, not angrily. Public humiliation can make the situation worse.
For Example:
“That behavior is not acceptable in this class. We treat everyone with respect.”
*2. Separate the Students*🫸
If tension is high, separate the bully and the target immediately to prevent escalation and protect the victim.
*3. Speak Privately with the Bully*
Never confront a bully harshly in front of others. Talk one-on-one:
Ask what happened.
Listen before judging.
Make expectations clear.
Often bullying hides insecurity, attention-seeking, or problems at home.
*5. Support the Targeted Student*🤍️
Victims need reassurance and protection. A teacher should:
Check in privately
Praise their courage
Ensure they feel safe in class🫶
*6. Document Incidents*" />
Keep written records of: dates, what happened, who was involved, and actions taken
This helps if patterns emerge or administrators must intervene.
