Anne Crason | A Brief Biography
__
Anne Carson, born in Toronto in 1950, is a poet, essayist, translator, and classicist who has lived between ancient Greek and modern English. A high school Latin teacher led her to Greek, and she went on to teach classics at McGill, Princeton, Michigan, and NYU.
Her books refuse the borders of genre. Eros the Bittersweet examines desire as absence, Autobiography of Red remakes a lost Greek epic as a verse novel, If Not, Winter translates Sappho's fragments with their silences intact, and Nox is an elegy built as an object. Loss, translation, and the broken text run through them all.
On October 8, 2026, the Swedish Academy awarded her the Nobel Prize in Literature for her "bold and inventive oeuvre," making her the second Canadian author to receive the honor. Earlier honors include the MacArthur Fellowship, the Griffin Poetry Prize, and the T. S. Eliot Prize.

Autobiography of Red (1998)Genre: Novel in verse
Autobiography of Red reimagines the ancient Greek myth of Geryon, a red-winged monster associated with the labours of Herakles. Drawing inspiration from the fragments of the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus, Carson transforms Geryon into a contemporary adolescent who struggles with identity, vulnerability, and his relationship with Herakles. Their relationship becomes a complex exploration of desire, betrayal, and emotional pain. Combining mythology with modern settings and experimental poetry, the novel challenges the boundaries between classical literature and contemporary experience.

Glass, Irony, and God (1995)Genre: Poetry collection
This collection explores love, suffering, spirituality, and the complexities of human relationships. Its best-known work, The Glass Essay, follows a speaker confronting emotional heartbreak while reflecting on the life and writings of Emily Brontë. The landscape of the English countryside, memories of a failed relationship, and reflections on Brontë's literary imagination become interconnected. Through this combination of personal experience, literary criticism, and philosophical inquiry, Carson demonstrates how poetry can transform private suffering into an investigation of consciousness and identity.
