۲۲۲۲ Establishing Meaning of ‘Grammar’ in a LessonEstablishing meaning of grammar can facilitate learning in grammar instruction. Learners need to understand not only what the concept means, but also how and when it is used. The way we establish the meaning of the grammatical structure can therefore have a significant impact on both comprehension and long-term retention, which will make use of the language much easier for learners. How we approach teaching grammar changes as learners become more proficient. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most effective techniques.
When establishing the meaning of a new grammatical structure for CEFR levels:
For A1 & A2, the lesson plan needs to be highly contextual, visual, and concrete presentation.For B1 & B2, the lesson plan needs to be more nuanced, text-driven, and through conceptual analysisHow to structure the "Meaning" component within lesson plans across A1 to B2 levels, using a Guided Discovery (or inductive) framework:
The Structure of a Meaning Phase (All Levels)Regardless of the level, every grammar lesson plan should explicitly detail how the teacher will check that learners actually understand the concept, not just the form. This is typically done through Concept Checking Questions (CCQs), binary, short-answer questions that force learners to prove they grasp the underlying concept (e.g., time, certainty, or intention).
Level-by-Level ImplementationIn today’s post we are just dealing with A1 & A2 levels based on CEFR.
A1 (Beginner): Concrete, Visual, and ImmediateAt A1 level, learners lack grammar vocabulary to understand abstract explanations. Meaning must be established using the "here and now" through:
• physical objects• clear visuals (picture, timeline, cline-a visual scale used to arrange language items from one extreme to another. Like: Adverbs of Frequency: Always (100%) → Usually → Often → Sometimes → Rarely → Never (0%)Modal Verbs of Probability: Will (100%) → Must → Should → May → Might → Could → Won't (0%)• and immediate situational contexts. Like: (Language in context in Evolve Series)
► Approach: Situational presentation with strong visual anchors.
Lesson Plan Target: Target a single, high-frequency function of the structure. Do not introduce multiple meanings at once.
In the Lesson Plan:• Context/Lead-in: Show a picture of a messy room.• Target Sentence: "There is a cat on the bed. There are books on the floor."• CCQs to include:
Do you see one cat in the picture? (Yes)Do you see one book in the picture? (No, more than one)A2 (Elementary): Clear Timelines and Simple ContrastsAt A2 level learners can handle basic abstract concepts like the distinction between past and present, but they still need familiar, highly relatable scenarios (routines, past holidays, future plans).► Approach: Simple contrastive contexts and basic timelines.
Lesson Plan Target: Differentiating between two closely related meanings or tenses.
In the Lesson Plan:• Context/Lead-in: A short text about a person's routine vs. what they are doing right now on vacation.• Target Sentence: "He usually drives a car, but today he is riding a bike."• CCQs to include:

۵۴B1 (Intermediate): Introducing Nuance and Abstract TimelinesAt B1, grammar starts dealing with aspects like duration, uncompleted actions, and degrees of probability. Learners have enough vocabulary to read short texts or listen to audio clips to discover the meaning themselves.• Approach: Guided Discovery via text/audio, mapping out aspectual differences on complex timelines.
• Lesson Plan Target: Understanding the relationship between two events or the speaker's perspective on time.
• In the Lesson Plan:• Context/Lead-in: An anecdote about an interrupted event.• Target Sentence: "I was cooking dinner when the phone rang."• CCQs to include:
Did I start cooking before or after the phone rang? (Before)Did I finish cooking? (We don't know).B2 (Upper-Intermediate): Pragmatics, Attitude, and Contextual ShiftAt B2, the meaning of grammar shifts from "When did this happen?" to "How does the speaker feel about what happened?". Meaning is deeply tied to pragmatics:• social context• politeness• emphasis• regret• Approach: Textual analysis, noticing tasks, and discussing the speaker's intent or attitude.
• Lesson Plan Target: Hypothetical meaning, shifting focus (passive voice/cleft sentences), or subtle modality.
• In the Lesson Plan:• Context/Lead-in: A dialogue where someone makes a mistake and reflects on it.• Target Sentence: "I should have studied harder for the exam."• CCQs to include:
Did I study hard? (No)Am I happy about this now? (No, I regret it)Can I change the past? (No, it's hypothetical). Establishing meaning is usually part of the Presentation/study stage of a lesson.A typical sequence is:1. Set context.2. Present target language. 3. Establish meaning. 4. Check understanding. 5. Focus on pronunciation. 6. Focus on form. 7. Controlled practice followed by semi-controlled practice8. Freer practice (Activation of the target language).9. Provide FB on language (Try first for self-correction-learner correcting her/himself, then peer correction, and finally teacher correction)10.
