اسم جمع (Collective Noun):
اسم جمع اسمی است که به گروهی از افراد، اشیاء یا حیوانات اشاره کند. مثل:team, army, jury, group
اگر اسم جمع مانند یک واحد پول، یک دسته یا یک گروه مورد نظر قرار گیرد، با فعل مفرد به کار می رود. مثال: The jury is in the courtroom.هیئت منصفه هنوز داخل دادگاه است.
در مثال بالا چون منظور از jury یک واحد کلی (a whole unit) یا یک هیئت منصفهی واحد تلقی میشود، فعل مربوط به آن به صورت مفرد آمده است.
حال به جملهی زیر توجه کنید: The jury are still debating the case.اعضای هیئت منصفه هنوز دارند در مورد پرونده بحث میکنند.
